Perth ACC Report to the Community 2009

The Perth ACC has published its fourth biennial Report to the Community. This was launched by the Perth ACC Chair Elizabeth Taylor at a function on 18th June, attended by key stakeholders including past Chairs, Board members, staff members, Regional Office Staff, Chairs and Executive Officers from other WA ACCs, project proponents and partners in our activities (see photos below).

The evening was a great success and an opportunity for all the celebrate all that has been achieved by the Perth ACC. The event MC Gerry Gannon, gave a history of the Perth ACC and this was followed by the Report Launch from Elizabeth and farewell acknowledgements to the Board and Staff. John Garland introduced a presentation looking back over the history of Perth ACC as a final tribute and then proposed a farewell toast to the Perth ACC.

Sadly this will be the last report for the Perth Area Consultative Committee. This marks the end of an era for the Area Consultative Committee network established by the Australian Government in 1994 to deliver labour market programs and provide independent feedback to the Australian Government on policies, programs and issues facing local communities.

The Report to the Community highlights the key activities and projects undertaken by the Perth ACC from June 2006 to March 2009 and follows on from the previous reports in 2002, 2004 and 2006. Activities such as the extremely successful Grant Writing workshops and Grants Expos provided the opportunity for local government, community and business to develop their skills in grant writing and also to find out about the opportunities for funding from Australian, state and local government.

People Places and Partnerships was the title of the Office of Local Government Leading Practise seminar which showcased national award winning projects aligned to the direction of the Perth ACC Strategic Regional Plan. It reflected issues raised in community consultations such as community involvement, mentoring, environmental and diversity issues and regional cooperation.

Perth ACC has undertaken extensive community consultations both as part of the Strategic Regional Planning process in 2007 and again in 2008 to provide input into the shaping of the RDA network and priorities for local community infrastructure that would encourage economic development.

The provision of feedback to the Australian government on policy and issues relating to regional development across the Perth region has been a key role of the Perth ACC. Input has been made to the House of Representatives Inquiry into the New Regional Funding program and a report entitled “The Importance of Cities to Regional Growth” on behalf of Perth, Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane ACCs has been provided to the Department Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, the Major Cities Unit and all federal metropolitan politicians. Hopefully this document will live on and provide the background for policy development and programs for the capital cities in years to come.

The final Report to the Community is a fitting testimony to the work and value of the activities undertaken by the Perth ACC over the last nine years. We thank all the key stakeholders in the Perth ACC networks who have provided the linkages and support to enable us to undertake our role as an established partner in a whole of government integrated approach to regional development across the Perth region.

We could not have done it without you.
